Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible to attend the Summer Institute?

The Summer Institute is open to students pursuing degrees at any institution of higher learning, as well as individuals seeking professional development. 
 

Are there prerequisites?

All Summer Institute students are required to complete the Introduction to Online Learning (IOL) module before starting courses. The module is free.

What is the application deadline?

Space permitting, applications are accepted until the start of (a) class(es). However, students are strongly encouraged to register by May 16, 2025 in order to ensure enrollment and to avoid cancellations.

Are the courses available for academic credit?

All Summer Institute courses are offered for academic credit.

For BSPH Students: Academic credit requires completion of a separate official School registration form, which will be assessable when registering through the online system.

For Non-BSPH Students: Institute participants who wish to take courses for academic credit, but are not currently enrolled in a degree program at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, may register as a Special Student Limited and receive academic credit.

Students registered as special students limited may accumulate a maximum of 16 credits total. After 16 credits have been earned, application to and acceptance in a degree program at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is required.

When is payment due?

All applications must be accompanied by payment in full. 

What forms of payment do you accept at the Summer Institute (BSPH)?

We accept American Express, Visa, MasterCard, Discover, cash, personal and business checks, purchase orders/contract forms.

Checks should be made payable to the Johns Hopkins University and must be in U.S. dollars drawn on a U.S. bank. Any bank charges incurred for processing will be charged to the registrant.

Participants financed by such organizations as the federal government, WHO, etc., should arrange with their agencies to provide supporting documents (purchase orders, training nomination forms, etc.) along with submission of their applications.

How may I access reading for my course(s)?

Information about readings will be distributed to participants via email prior to the beginning of class.

I've taken a class(es) for credit. When/how can I find out my grades?

Students who register for academic credit will be able to get a transcript of their Summer Institute grades. To have transcripts forwarded to another institution, a written request must be submitted to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Registrar's Office at least ten working days before the transcript is needed. Students who want Summer Institute courses applied to degree programs at other institutions should consult with their home institution regarding transfer of credits and credit conversion.
