October 15th is the priority deadline for categorical residents. Applications received after that date may be reviewed on a space-available basis only.
2. How do I apply to the Hopkins General Preventive Medicine Program?
All applicants must apply via the online School of Public Health Application Service (SOPHAS) system.
Those applying to the combined program with MedStar Family Medicine or to the transitional program with Bassett Healthcare should follow the instructions and first apply to the respective program via ERAS.
3. Can I apply to the Hopkins General Preventive Medicine Program using ERAS?
Applicants are not required to apply through ERAS. Applicants may use the ERAS system to submit their USMLE scores if they wish. All other required application materials must be submitted using SOPHAS. Please note using ERAS is optional and does not replace the SOPHAS application.
4. Where do I send official copies of my transcript?
SOPHAS Transcript Processing Center
P.O. Box 9111
Watertown, MA 02471
5. Where do I send an official copy of my USMLE scores?
JHSPH Admissions Office

Baltimore, MD 21205
Phone 410-955-3543
6. Is the USMLE required?
For applicants to the categorical program, USMLE Steps 1 and 2 (both parts) are required. Step 3 is preferred.
7. What clinical experience must I have to be eligible to apply?
Applicants to the categorical program must have a minimum of one clinical year training (PGY-1) in an ACGME-approved program.
Applicants to the combined program with MedStar Family Medicine or the transitional year with Bassett Healthcare will complete their PGY1 year in those respective programs.
8. What if I am a foreign medical graduate?
- Foreign medical graduates must have an ECFMG certificate.
- International applicants must also submit a course-by-course credential evaluation of their academic records. Note: World Education Service offers a discount to applicants using the SOPHAS system.
- All applicants must have a minimum of one year clinical training (PGY-1) in an ACGME approved program.
9. What if I already have an MPH degree?
Please e-mail the Program Manager with additional information regarding your MPH degree and include your CV. If you have graduated within 7 years, you may be eligible to apply to the two-year RES-GPMR program. Note: You may be required to take additional ACGME-required coursework.
10. Am I required to apply through ERAS?
Applicants are required to apply through the SOPHAS system. Applicants are not required to apply through ERAS. If you have an ERAS account and choose to apply for the Hopkins General Preventive Medicine Residency through ERAS, we can accept your USMLE scores from ERAS as official documents. All other required application materials must be uploaded directly to SOPHAS.
