As one of the oldest and largest preventive medicine residency programs in the nation, we have a long history and vast experience in preparing physicians for careers in preventive medicine. Many of our graduates become leaders in their respective fields because of the outstanding training they receive in our program as residents.

Over the two year residency training period, qualified physicians have the opportunity to be systematically exposed to the basic tenets of preventive medicine as it is practiced by physicians in this country and throughout the world.

During the academic phase of the program, residents receive strong didactic training in the core areas of public health, health promotion and disease prevention, population-based medicine and research, and clinical preventive services. They also gain skills that prepare them to assume leadership roles in the field. During the practicum phase of the residency, residents rotate through a wide variety of settings and environments where preventive medicine is practiced.

Our residents benefit tremendously from the wealth of talent in the School's faculty, in areas such as international health, epidemiology, health policy and management, and population and family health sciences. The program is enhanced by the School's proximity to Washington D.C., and the many federal health agencies, non-profit public health organizations, and private consulting firms located in the region.

As you explore our site, we hope that you’ll gain insight into the breadth and depth of our program. If you have any questions about our training program, our residents, or the specialty of preventive medicine, please feel free to contact us.
