Joseph A. Boystak, MPH '77

CEO Brightwaters Capital

Joe is a co-founding managing partner, Health2047 Capital Partners, a venture capital fund based in Menlo Park, California, and CEO of Brightwaters Capital. He is an experienced venture capitalist, investment banker and entrepreneur in the health care industry. He has over 30 years of high-level investment banking, venture capital and start-up company experience in the healthcare industry on a global scale. Previously he was Founding Managing Director, Global Life Sciences, Jefferies; Managing Director & Head of Healthcare Finance, Tucker Anthony Sutro; Head of Healthcare Finance, Security Pacific Merchant Bank; and Vice President Healthcare Finance, Dean Witter Reynolds.

An area of exceptional current interest for Joe is the convergence of healthcare and technology and convergent investment structures designed to have a favorable and disruptive impact on the healthcare industry at scale. This centers on novel solutions that leverage data, predicative analytics, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, remote sensors, robotics, among other technologies to address large market failures. These technologies will have profound impacts on health delivery, R&D, clinical decision support, consumer engagement, workflows and new value-based payment models for care - all of which are aimed at improving health outcomes and democratizing care. This will include B2B and B2C.

As an investment banker, Joe has advised and financed approximately 300 publicly-traded and privately-held companies in every sector of the healthcare industry. Transactions included all forms of equity, convertible and debt securities, credit facilities, mergers & acquisitions, corporate partnering and strategic advisory with clients ranging from start-ups to large market capitalization.

He has co-founded companies, working with top-tier academic medical centers including: Johns Hopkins; Harvard Medical School Massachusetts General Hospital; UCLA; Dana Faber Cancer Institute; and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in immunotherapy, health informatics, medical device technology, molecular diagnostics, anti-microbials, computational biology, computational pathology, and artificial intelligence. Joe holds four U.S. and European-issued patents for the SEM Scanner (UCLA), an FDA-approved first-in-class medical device technology.

He served on numerous corporate, non profit and university boards providing healthcare and finance domain expertise. He is frequently invited to speak at health industry, institutional investor, and global economic conferences including the MILKEN Global Conference. He is an active participant in Financial Innovation Labs at Faster Cures, a division of the Milken Institute. He has served as an expert witness on health care finance matters.

Joe earned his BA (cum laude) from Boston University, Master of Health Science, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and completed executive education at the Wharton School. He is a registered representative with FINRA and holds Series 7 and 63 licenses.
