Individuals and organizations are encouraged to join our network of practice partners and agencies hosting a student for a Master's level practicum. This is a great opportunity to recruit skilled graduate students to support public health projects and initiatives.
The Department of International Health offers a Master of Science in Public Health that is intended for students who wish to pursue a professional career in the field of public health. The MSPH degree provides foundational public health skills while allowing students to develop specialized skills in one of our four program areas. MSPH degrees are completed in 1.5 to 2 years.
A practicum is one part of our MSPH program's academic requirements. You might think of a practicum as an internship or applied learning experience. In addition to completing the requisite coursework, students must gain practical experience in the application of the principles and methods learned in the classroom through a practicum. Students complete their practicums both within the US and abroad. The Department has field sites across the world where students may apply for positions. Faculty and staff also help students find opportunities with other global health organizations.
You and/or your organization can be one of those partners! Student learning aims are wide-ranging - we are always looking for new partners since the availability of student placements can change, and so do their interests. We have a long history of successful student placements, and know well their training and abilities, specific to each program area. It is our goal to make a good match for both sides – student and host site.
Please do not hesitate to be in touch with our Practicum Manager, Lisa Folda, if you have any questions or would like to discuss your potential involvement.
Getting Started
During a practicum experience, students are supervised by a site preceptor and the School to develop and define the practicum activities, relevant public health competencies, and final deliverables.
Preceptors must be willing to commit time to supervising a student and providing feedback on their work. The preceptor should have knowledge of the student project to assist the student throughout the duration of their practicum.
In return, preceptors contribute to the education of young public health professionals who bring skills and perspective to add to your work. This is a meaningful step in their growth and can truly influence their preparation to join us as practitioners and researchers.
If you are interested in becoming a preceptor and hosting student practicums at your organization, please review the responsibilities and eligible practicum criteria listed below.
