Summer Institute in Environmental Health and Engineering
About This Program
The Summer Institute in Environmental Health and Engineering (EHE) is designed to provide training in key topics relevant to the practice and application of environmental health.
Courses are designed for students who are interested in learning more about environmental health science concepts and for practicing public health professionals with responsibilities for health, safety, and environmental matters in government agencies, non-government organizations, and industry.
Students seeking academic credit
- Will receive an official transcript from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health
- Are required to fulfill course requirements and methods of evaluation
- Can choose either a letter grade or pass/fail grade option
Non-credit students
- Can request a formal statement of performance if they complete the required coursework
- Will receive a paper certificate upon course completion
Class logistics
All classes are held at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, located at 615 North Wolfe Street, in East Baltimore. The only exception to this is the short course Urban Agriculture and Public Health, which is held at the Cylburn Arboretum.
The Summer Institute ‘Headquarters’ are in room E7527, which is the main office for the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering.
The School and University are convenient to bus, light-rail and subway. In addition, Baltimore is served by both Amtrak and the Baltimore-Washington International Airport. Students who will be driving to the medical campus may park in the Washington Street parking garage. The Institute will provide discounted parking coupons for purchase at final registration.
While enrolled in the Summer Institute, participants will have access to the Welch Medical Library at the School of Medicine and the Eisenhower Library at the Homewood campus.
There are many eating facilities available to students during the day. The Garden Plate, located on the ninth floor of the School of Public Health, serves breakfast and lunch. The Daily Grind is located on the second floor mezzanine, and features not only espressos and made-to-order specialty drinks, but boasts daily specials as well as wraps, salads and sandwiches. Johns Hopkins Hospital, located across the street from the Bloomberg School of Public Health has a number of dining options. Numerous eateries, such as the Northeast Market at 2101 Monument Street, are within walking distance of the School.
Curriculum
Summer Institute courses are offered in a short-term/intensive format, and are available for academic credit, but participants can choose to take courses not for credit (professional development) at 50 percent off the regular tuition rate.
Many of the EHE Summer Institute courses, combined with online offerings, can be used to complete a Certificate in Environmental and Occupational Health or a Certificate in Food Systems, the Environment and Public Health.
