Cohort 3 Data
Some Clarifications about the Cohort 3 Data
Some of you have worked exclusively on the Cohorts 1 & 2 data, but don't worry, in just about all cases we used the identical naming conventions for the variables and constructs in Cohort 3. So for example, pccdp... and pccax... stand for child self-reports of depressive symptoms and anxious symptoms, respectively, in the Cohort 3 data just like in Cohorts 1 & 2. So pccdp362, pccdp372 & pccdp382 are the variables for the mean of child reported depressive symptoms on the total HIF scale in grades 6, 7, & 8. And pccdp361, pccdp371 & pccdp381 are the same thing except they are the means for the original 30 items used in grades 1-3. I added about 15 more items in grades 6-8.
The Harter self-perceptions of competence total scores for the various subscales all start with spc for self-perceptions of competence, then two letters representing the subscale such as cf for close friendship and 3 for cohort 3 and 6, 7 or 8 for the grade. For example, spccf36 spccf37 spccf38 are the total scores for the close friendship domain in grades 6, 7, and 8.
The importance variables from the harter follow the same naming logic. For example, impcf36 impcf37 impcf38 are the total scores for the importance of close friendship in grades 6, 7, and 8 as perceived by the child.
The parent reports of discipline, positive parent involvement/reinforcement, monitoring, and rejection are
Discipline
dismn311 dismn312 dismnp61 dismnp71 dismnp81 (311 = grade 1 fall, 312 grade 1 spring, 61 grade 6 spring, 71 grade 7 spring, etc.)
Positive Parent Involvement/reinforcement
plamn311 plamn312 plamnp12 plamnp61 plamnp71 plamnp81
Monitoring
monmn311 monmn312 monmnp12 monmnp61 monmnp71 monmnp81
Rejection
rejmn311 rejmn312 rejmnp12 rejmnp61 rejmnp71 rejmnp81
In terms of teacher and parent reports of behavior, teacher constructs start with an sct and parent constructs with sfm. For example, sctcd36 is teacher reported conduct problems in grade 6, whereas sfmcp36 is parent rated concentration problems in grade 6. cd stands for conduct problems, od for oppositional defiant behavior, aa for authority acceptance/aggressive behavior, sb for shy behavior, hy for hyperactivity, im for impulsivity, li for likeability.
The variables for a DISC diagnosis for conduct disorder based on parent report are:
cdp6y cdp7y cdp8y
cdp6symp cdp7symp cdp8symp
The DISC diagnosis for conduct disorder based on child report are:
cdc6y cdc7y cdc8y
cdc6symp cdc7symp cdc8symp represent the symptom counts
The DISC diagnosis for MDD based on parent report are:
mdp6m mdp7y mdp8y (note that in 6th grade that mdd episode was for the last month and not for the last year as in later grades)
mdp6symp mdp7symp mdp8symp represent the symptom counts
The DISC diagnosis for MDD based on child report are:
mdc6y mdc7y mdc8y
mdc6symp mdc7symp mdc8symp represent the symptom counts
The raw items are in the data set also, so it can be confusing, but the construct names are typically briefer and the only numbers in the variable name are usually a 3 representing cohort and a 6, 7 or 8 representing grade.
Also, an easy way to navigate through the data labels is to simply click in SPSS on Utilities on the tool bar and then on File Info. Then export the output file to a text file. Open the text file in Wordpad and then search for the construct of interest, say depression or anxiety, etc.
Also, if you run into sometime doesn't seem to make sense in the, like the life events experienced by a family member, just ask Scott and if he doesn't have an answer, ask me. And remember you can always use the web-site to figure stuff out. But don't be shy to ask when you can't figure something out.
Life events
leptot36 leptot37 leptot38 are the total counts of life events experienced by friends in grades 6 (36), 7 (37) and 8 (38).
lestot36 lestot37 lestot38 are the total counts of life events experienced by the child in grades 6 (36), 7 (37) and 8 (38).
leftot36 leftot37 leftot38 are the total counts of life events experienced by the child in grades 6 (36), 7 (37) and 8 (38).
Grade 10-12
The grade 10 and 11 naming convention will use a letter to represent the year. For grade 10, the letter will be "a" and for grade 11 the letter for grade will be "b" and "c" for garde 12. For example, depression in grade 10 will be pccdp3a1 and for grade 11 it will be pccdp3b1. If you use the variables command in the utilities menu in SPSS, the variables will be listed out alphabetically. This naming convention was built specifically for this function so that each variable will be listed in order. There are some variables that include the actual value of the garde, such as tobrec12 for tobacco recency in grade 12. Check the Item Level Tables for the names of each item and construct across time.
