Environmental Epidemiology Postdoctoral Fellowship Opportunity

The postdoctoral fellow will work as part of the research team comprising the Geisinger Environmental Health Institute, a joint effort with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The EHI currently includes four dedicated faculty (Drs. Annemarie Hirsch, Melissa Poulsen, Agnes Sundaresan, and Brian Schwartz), regular collaborators (Dr. Karen Bandeen-Roche), as well as dedicated staff. Staff provide skills in biostatistical programming and analysis, geographic information systems, primary data collection, and study management that can assist the fellow in various tasks.
The fellow will contribute to ongoing research with NIH and CDC funding involving environmental epidemiology using electronic health record (EHR) data and primary data collection on such health outcomes as type 2 diabetes (e.g., http://diabetesleadnetwork.org/), COVID-19, chronic rhinosinusitis, asthma, bronchiectasis, and others. These have been studied in relation to a range of community and environmental features, including unconventional natural gas development, industrial farm animal production, and food, physical activity, land use, social, and natural environments. Fellows will lead analyses and manuscripts on a range of candidate topics, but likely including the bidirectional influences of COVID-19 and type 2 diabetes. The successful candidate will have strong methodological skills, work well as part of a team, and be motivated to lead projects culminating in peer-reviewed publications.
Training in epidemiologic methods, exposure science, epidemiology with EHR data, and manuscript and grant writing will be provided. The fellow will be encouraged to pursue career development activities, present at scientific conferences, develop independent research projects, and apply for a K99/R00 or other research grants. The position will be primarily located in Baltimore at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health with primary mentoring by Dr. Schwartz, but opportunities to engage more directly with Geisinger faculty and resources in Danville, PA, are also possible.
Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent degree in epidemiology, environmental health sciences, biostatistics, or related fields. Programming and data management skills in SAS, R, or Stata as well as excellent writing skills are required.
The position is a two-year appointment with the possibility of extension contingent upon satisfactory performance. The start date is flexible beginning in summer 2020.
