Schedule an Appointment
Onsite or virtual appointments may be scheduled up to four weeks in advance of the date you are requesting. Because of limited staffing, students are advised to make an appointment several days in advance of when they would like to meet.
Appointments always begin on the hour and last 50 minutes, with a five-minute survey to complete at the end of the appointment. We will be opening up appointments for four weeks at a time. The first block of appointments will be between February 27 and March 24, and the second block will be between March 27 and April 21. Initially, students will be limited to a maximum of one appointment per four-week block; however, if appointments within a block are not taken, or we develop the capacity to offer more appointments, we hope to offer students the ability to attend more than one appointment per block. If you would like to schedule an additional appointment in the same four-week block, email the Writing Center at BSPHwritingcenter@jh.edu with the details of the additional appointment you are seeking, including both the tutor's name and desired time slot. If no other student has requested that appointment 48 hours before the appointment time, you will be notified that the appointment is available to you.

Who We Serve
The Writing Center Pilot serves students currently enrolled in degree programs at the Bloomberg School.
What We Do
Our appointments are intended to help students at any stage of the writing process with academic writing such as capstones or theses, scientific papers, or personal statements for applications to jobs or other programs. You may be trying to brainstorm ideas for an assignment or you may be in the final stages of writing. We are also able to help you become a better editor of your own writing. You can let us know what you would like to work on when you schedule your appointment.
We welcome students of all levels of language and writing experience. Tutoring appointments are meant to assist with style, composition, and conveying thoughts; they are not meant to be primarily for English language, spelling and grammar assistance. For English language assistance, please consider taking the English Language for Academic Purposes Course.
Appointment Policies
Please be aware of the following appointment guidelines:
- Please be on time for your appointment and bring your draft and assignment details (if applicable) with you.
- In this pilot phase, it is especially important that we have as few no-shows as possible – as we will be using student demand as an indicator of whether to continue this program in future years. If something arises that makes it impossible to make your appointment, please cancel your appointment as soon as possible and email the Writing Center at BSPHwritingcenter@jh.edu.
- We will also ask that you complete a short, five-minute survey at the end of your appointment, as your feedback will be essential to any decisions about whether to continue or expand the Writing Center in future years.
If you need to reschedule or cancel an appointment:
-
Please let us know so that we can see others. The earlier we know, the more likely we can fit in someone else. If you have to cancel, please do so at least eight hours before your scheduled appointment. If you must cancel an appointment two (or fewer) hours prior to your appointment, you will need to email the Writing Center at BSPHwritingcenter@jh.edu.
- To delete your appointment:
- Log in to WC Online and select your appointment. A new window will open.
- Check the “Delete this reservation?” box at the bottom of the page.
- Select “Save changes.”
- We hope to see you back again soon! Those who miss an appointment and do not show up are marked as a “no-show.”
Arriving late to your appointment:
-
Those who arrive 10 or more minutes late for an appointment may be marked as a no-show. If you know you will be late, you will need to email the Writing Center at BSPHwritingcenter@jh.edu.
Writers are limited to a maximum of one appointment per student per four-week block (for now!):
-
There are two main reasons for this limit. The main reason for this is that we are piloting the Writing Center this year to assess demand. As a result, we may not have the capacity to help all students with all their writing needs. We want to make sure that all interested students have at least one opportunity to work with a Writing Center tutor if they are interested. We hope to open additional slots for students to have more than one appointment in the future. Please bear with us while we assess how many students are using our services and figure out how many tutors we need to have!
-
If you would like to schedule an additional appointment in the same four-week block, email the Writing Center at BSPHwritingcenter@jh.edu with the details of the additional appointment you are seeking, including both the tutor's name and desired time slot. If no other student has requested that appointment 48 hours before the appointment time, you will be notified that the appointment is available to you.
