Career Coaching Appointment Policy
All Career Services appointments are virtual via Zoom. Appointments are scheduled via Handshake and/or with a coach as necessary. Each appointment is 30-minutes, and we offer a 10-minute grace period for each session. For an initial appointment, we encourage you to be prepared to discuss your background, including interests, skills and future goals to best align resources and support.
We have a finite number of appointments available each week and aim to serve as many students as possible. When a student fails to show up for a scheduled appointment, it negatively impacts their fellow students' access to appointments with BSPH Career Services staff. It is important to e-mail to cancel or reschedule your appointment as soon as possible.
The following policies will be enforced when students fail to show up for a scheduled appointment:
Appointment No-Shows and Cancellations
A no-show is considered any appointment in which a student fails to attend at all or by the 10-minute grace period without written notification.
Cancellations must be done via Handshake or by e-mailing the Career Coach directly. Cancellations made 10 minutes after the start of the appointment are considered a no-show.
Second Appointment No-Show
We recognize that unplanned circumstances and/or sickness happens. If a student must be late, they must notify Career Services via e-mail within the 10-minute grace period. If notification has NOT been received within the 10-minute grace period, the appointment will be cancelled, considered a no-show and the student must reschedule.
To minimize disruption for other students, if you arrive less than 10 minutes late, your appointment will be reduced by the number of minutes you arrive late. Appointments cannot be extended and will end at the originally scheduled time.
Appointment Tardiness
We recognize that unplanned circumstances and/or sickness happens. If a student must be late, they must notify Career Services via e-mail within the 10-minute grace period. If notification has NOT been received within the 10-minute grace period, the appointment will be cancelled, considered a no-show and the student must reschedule.

Know Before You Go: Appointment Preparation
Use the following guides to prepare for an appointment with Career Services. Select which of the following best describes your upcoming appointment to best prepare:
Before a Career Exploration and Decision-Making Appointment
Meeting with a career counselor to discuss career exploration is an important step to take to discover more about yourself and the career paths that might be a good fit for you.
Many students are unclear about how their education fits into the working world. Career Services reviews strategies and resources to guide you in this process. To make sure we make the most of your appointment, we recommend the following before meeting:
• Take a few minutes to read about potential career pathways at publichealthcareers.org.
• Spend time reviewing the Pathways to Public Health and Areas in Public Health and make note of anything that stands out or is most interesting to you so we to discuss in the appointment
Before a Resume, Cover Letter and/or LinkedIn Appointment
Our team is committed to helping you create an effective resume, cover letter and LinkedIn profile that highlight your strengths and experience. Since resumes revisions require multiple elements, we recommend the following before meeting to maximize the appointment:
• For general resume OR cover letter revision, review the Resume Examples and Cover Letter Examples and make format revisions based on the template provided.
• For first-time resume OR cover letter creation, compile a draft resume in Word or Google Docs based on the example before the appointment.
• For document tailoring, ensure the document is in alignment with the general resume or cover letter templates and bring the job/internship posting to the meeting to customize.
• For LinkedIn profile revisions, review the LinkedIn article on profile optimization, and watch the Branding and LinkedIn presentation via Career Service’s YouTube and come prepared with questions to workshop.
Before a Job or Internship Search Appointment
We are glad you are seeking help with the job or internship search! Opportunity searching is a multi-step proactive process that requires preparation through information gathering, networking and document preparation. To maximize the appointment, we recommend completing the following to get started:
• Review LinkedIn and Indeed informational interviewing resources to understand networking as a job searching strategy
• Identify the public health areas/industries that align with your interest area(s)
• Review how to develop and then create a Job Search Tracking Sheet via Microsoft Excel, Word or Google Spreadsheets
• Start revising application materials (resume & cover letter) and bring to appointment
Before an Interview Strategies, Mock Interview or Job Negotiation Appointment
Our team will provide interviewing support, including before, during and after preparation along with education on best practices for different interview types. To schedule a mock interview, students must first meet with a career coach to discuss interviewing strategies and learn how to navigate the process. To best leverage the appointment, we recommend completing the following before the meeting:
• Review the Interview Guide and consider your own skill-based situational examples to be used in interviewing
• Review and research national salary averages and the company’s benefits posted online.
• Research the organizations that you will be interviewing with or are interested in applying to
• Copy and save all position descriptions to align candidate skills with employer requirements
• Identify gaps in candidate experience and position description requirements to align in meeting
• Bring a resume and job/internship posting as an example of the type of position you would be interested in interviewing or negotiating for to your appointment
