The Department of Biostatistics team recently won first place in the inaugural Bloomberg Olympics, hosted by the Bloomberg School of Public Health Student Assembly.
Held during Wellness Week to promote physical activity and foster a sense of unity and friendly competition among the departments within the School, the Olympic games consisted of basketball, badminton, chess, dodgeball, and volleyball.
Speaking about the games, biostatistics PhD student Anagh Chattopadhyay remarked, “I really enjoyed the excellent organization by our student assembly, and it gave me ample opportunity to interact with students from other batches and also gave me an opportunity to participate in so many sports! It was an excellent occasion for team-building and mutual support!”
Due to a limited number of students from the Department of Biostatistics available to play for some of the games, players from the departments of Epidemiology, International Health, Mental Health, Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, and Master’s of Public Health joined the Biostatistics team when needed.
The Biostatistics team placed first in badminton, second in chess, volleyball, and basketball, and third in dodgeball.
The first-place badminton team was made up of biostatistics ScM students Rita Fu and Yangzhenyu Gao. “We started off on the back foot, down 5:13 in the first game. But as the match went on, we found our rhythm and luckily, we pulled it together and won the next two games,” said Gao.
Wellness Week also included a yoga class, sexual health workshop, massages, and more. Biostatistics PhD student Michelle Qin said the week “was a great way to bring together students from different departments and programs and remind us to have fun and take care of ourselves.”
