Health Services Research 

Marilyn Bergner Award in Health Services Research 
Dr. Bergner, a faculty member in the Department of Health Policy and Management from 1986 to 1992, was a leader in health services research.  She developed the Sickness Impact Profile, a patient questionnaire that measures the level of every day functioning during the course of illness.  This award, established by her husband, Dr. Lawrence Bergner, her colleagues, friends, and students, supports PhD students in the health services research and policy concentration in the Department of Health Policy and Management. 

Charles D. Flagle Fund 
The Charles D. Flagle Award was established in 1994 by alumni, colleagues, and friends of Charles Flagle, DrEng, in honor of his long dedication to teaching and health services research.  The late Dr. Flagle, Professor Emeritus of Health Policy and Management, served on the faculty of the School for more than 30 years.  From 1967 to 1968, he served as special assistant to the U.S. Surgeon General for Applied Health Technology, and in 1978 was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.  Dr. Flagle’s work related to technological advances and their translation into clinical services and improved public health.  This fund supports a doctoral student from the Department of Health Policy and Management, whose work is in the area of health services research, including technology assessment and medical informatics. 

Alan Gittelsohn Doctoral Student Scholarship 
To support PhD students in the Department of Health Policy and Management. Selection preference will be given to students working on statistics and methods for health policy. 

Judith Dellinger Kasper Endowment 
To support methodologically rigorous dissertation research that advances care quality and well-being of vulnerable populations, in honor of the scientific contributions of Dr. Kasper.  This fund will be managed by the Roger C. Lipitz Research & Policy Center in the Department of Health, Policy and Management, and will support doctoral students enrolled in a Bloomberg School research doctoral program in such fields as behavioral sciences, health services research, nursing, social sciences, epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy, or health informatics, and have completed all non-dissertation requirements for their doctoral degree by the time of submission of the application, including completion of their qualifying exams.  

Barbara Starfield Scholarship 
The Barbara Starfield Scholarship was established to commemorate the life and work of the late Dr. Barbara Starfield.  Dr. Starfield’s overriding concerns were in understanding the impact of health services on health, especially with regard to the relative contributions of primary care and specialty care on reducing inequalities in health.  Her specific research interests were in primary care measurement, the relationship between the processes and outcomes of health care, quality of care, health status measurement, particularly for adolescents and child, and child health policy.

John P. Young Memorial Fund 
This fund was established in 1988 by former students, colleagues, friends, and family members of John P. Young, DEng ’62, professor of Health Policy and Management.  The fund is a lasting memorial to a professor who was known for his dedication to the students and the School, especially in the area of management sciences.  The fund supports an annual award to an outstanding student in the Department of Health Policy and Management's MHA program. 
 

Injury Prevention 

Susan P. Baker Scholarship in Injury Prevention and Control 
The Susan P. Baker Scholarship in Injury Prevention and Control was established in 2012 as part of the 25th anniversary or the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy. The Scholarship was created to provide support for an outstanding doctoral student at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health who has demonstrated great promise to make significant contributions to the field of injury prevention and control, including both unintentional and intentional injury. 

Susan and Timothy Baker Centennial Scholarship in Gun Control 
The Fund will be used to support a student in the Department of Health Policy and Management conducting gun policy research. If such a student is unavailable, then at the discretion of the department’s chair, the funds may be used to support a student studying injury prevention. 

Susan and Timothy Baker Fund in Safety and Design 
The income will be used to support doctoral students pursuing PhD or ScD degrees or, with the permission of the department chair, post-doctoral students.  The income can be used for tuition, stipend or living expenses. 

William Haddon, Jr. Fellowship in Injury Prevention 
To support students in the Department of Health Policy and Management conducting injury prevention research at the discretion of the department chair. 

Milton G. Hauer Endowment Fund in Injury Prevention 
The income from this fund will be used to support annually the research work of a doctoral student or young faculty member in the Injury Prevention Center, Department of Health Policy and Management 

Richard E. Hoffman, MD, MPH Endowed Scholarship for Injury Prevention 
To support students interested in studying injury prevention, epidemiology, control, and policy as awarded by the Department of Health Policy and Management. 

Nancy A. Robertson Scholarship in Injury Prevention 
To support students in the Department of Health Policy and Management conducting injury prevention research at the discretion of the department chair. 

John Paul Stapp Endowed Scholarship 
Created by friends of Colonel John Stapp, this fund provides for students whose research and study focus on aviation safety, highway safety, or biomechanics—areas that have benefited greatly from Colonel Stapp's historic research. 

Ganizani Tembo Scholarship 
To support doctoral students in the Department of Health Policy and Management. Selection preference will be given to students who are focusing on injury prevention research.  


Health Policy and Management 

Health Policy & Management Fellowship Support 
This fund was established by Karen Davis, former Chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management, with funds contributed by alumni, faculty, and staff of the department.  It provides tuition support for departmentally-funded PhD doctoral students each year. 

The June Culley Scholarship in Health Policy and Management (doctoral) 
Dr. June E. Culley received an MPH degree from the School in 1970 and earned a Doctorate degree in Health Services Administration in 1981.  She was a risk manager for the VA Medical Center at Fort Howard, Maryland.  The Scholarship, established in 2002 through Dr. Culley’s estate, provides support to deserving students from the Department of Health Policy and Management. 

The June Culley Scholarship in Health Policy and Management (masters) 
Dr. June E. The John C. Hume Doctoral Award 
Admired for his humor and wisdom, the late Dr. John Hume served as Dean, faculty member, and mentor to many generations of public health professionals. This award, established by faculty, friends, and alumni, honors Dr. Hume's commitment to excellence in doctoral research in public health. This award is granted each year to a continuing doctoral student whose research will make a significant impact on the field. 

The Victor P. Raymond Memorial Fund 
Friends and family members of the late Dr. Raymond, ScD ‘87, a graduate of the Department of Health Policy and Management, established this award in 1994.  Dr. Raymond was influential in one of the most dynamic arenas for public policy development, the U.S. Congress.  He spent more than 12 years working on health care research and policy analysis, federal health program management, and legislative affairs.  The award supports a continuing doctoral student in the department whose work has relevance at the national and state levels. 

Sandvold-Hydle Family Scholarship 
The Sandvold-Hydle Family Scholarship provides support to students in the Department of Health Policy and Management with special consideration being given to those students, particularly public health nurses and nurse midwives, who have committed to work in the local, state or federal public health sector. 

Alison Snow Jones Prize 
The Alison Snow Jones Prize was established in 2011 to commemorate the life and work of Dr. Alison Snow Jones. Dr. Snow Jones received her PhD in Health Economics from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and taught courses in topics ranging from health economics to the ethics and economics of social justice.  Her research interests included women’s health, tobacco control, intimate partner violence, alcohol use and abuse and its impact on labor force outcomes and children’s health.  Across the breadth of her academic work, she always strove to serve as a bridge between the academic world and the world beyond the institution she served in order to make a positive change.  The award honors excellence in the thesis or individual manuscript of a Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School doctoral student. 

The Pearl and Jeremiah German Scholarship in Gerontology 
Established in 2001, this fund provides tuition assistance or stipend support or both to those doctoral students in the Department of Health Policy and Management or at the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology, and Clinical Research who have declared an interest in gerontology. 

HPM Centennial Scholarship 
Income from the Fund will support students in the Department of Health Policy and Management.  Preference should be given to doctoral students in the Department and this Fund may be used as a recruitment tool to attract the best and brightest students. 

Show-Chwan Scholarship 
To support doctoral students in the Department of Health Policy and Management.  Selection preference will be given to students who pursue hospital management studies and/or those who research hospital management in Taiwan. 

Donald M. and Sharon C. Steinwachs Endowed Scholarship  
To benefit the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Bloomberg School of Public Health as an endowed gift to be held in perpetuity for scholarship support for doctoral students.
