Becky Freeman, PhD

As part of the Prevention Research Collaboration, University of Sydney, Becky Freeman leads a program of research focused on countering the commercial determinants of health. Her expertise is focused on: 1) how policy processes are manipulated by industries that are harmful to health and 2) how they use digital and social media, to both promote their products and influence public and political attitudes toward public health regulation. Freeman’s research also considers how public health bodies could better use these same digital media tools for chronic disease prevention. She also teaches in the MPH program, including the coordination of two electives: Public Health Advocacy and Tobacco Control. Recognizing her leadership in researching digital platforms, Freeman has prepared technical reports for the World Health Organisation Framework Convention on Tobacco Control outlining how to monitor and regulate tobacco industry advertising. In 2018, she chaired the WHO expert advisory on cross-border tobacco advertising and promotion, and in 2020/21 served as an expert consultant to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Freeman was an expert member of the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Electronic Cigarettes Working Committee 2020-2022. She is the Chief Investigator of the Generation Vape study 2021-2023.
