What sparked your interest in public health?
I want to do clinical research and go to medical school, but I felt that going to medical school without some dedicated public health education would not be the right decision for me. My vision of being a doctor involves thinking critically about patients in wider contexts, which public health prepares you for.
What led you to the MHS in Mental Health program in the Department of Mental Health at the Bloomberg School?
It's the only department of mental health at a public health school. Even though the program is only nine months, it still provides lots of opportunities and a wide variety of areas to research in mental health. I also heard a lot of positive reviews from alums of the program.
What has been your favorite class so far at BSPH?
Epidemiology of Substance Use and Related Problems. We have great class discussions and Renee Johnson, PhD, is an awesome professor. I also like Statistical Reasoning with John McGready, PhD, ScM, because he is a funny and understanding professor who welcomes questions during lecture and after class.
Tell us about a project you’re working on that you’re excited about.
I am working on my thesis with Kristin Schneider, PhD, an associate research professor in the Department of Health, Behavior, and Society. I'm using data from the SCOPE study, which surveys people who inject drugs in Baltimore about their experiences and habits.
What is one experience in the program or department that stands out as a favorite?
Professors in the Department, including Jeanine Parisi, PhD, the director of the MHS in Mental Health program and BSPH's Vice Dean for Education, were such kind supporters when I was competing on the women's volleyball team during first and second term.
What do you enjoy about living in Baltimore?
There's plenty to do here, like festivals, vintage shopping, farmer's markets, music, and sports. We experience beautiful seasons and are right by the water. Plus, it's a great location along the East Coast for day or weekend trips to other cities.
What advice do you have for prospective students interested in joining the DMH community?
Be open to new topics because you will be exposed to a lot. Don't be scared to chat with anyone in the Department, professor or student. Make time for self-care and fun because the programs are demanding, but you are fully capable and there is support if you need it.
