Focuses on the essential principles of personal and interpersonal leadership that can be used in an organizational setting to enhance performance, align and empower personnel, and assure organizational engagement. Strengthens the act of listening as a keystone leadership practice. Applies leadership skills in a hands-on practical way that allows them to assess one's own strengths and weaknesses in leadership capacities including cultural proficiency and encourages them to challenge their own beliefs and assumptions about what constitutes leadership. Offers a comprehensive review of contemporary issues and perspectives on leadership, multidisciplinary and systems-oriented leadership approaches as well as classic leadership theory. Includes topics such as personal assessment and development, values and ethics, motivation, power, followership, group dynamics, multiculturalism in leadership, conflict resolution, performance excellence, and creating organizational change strategies.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
- Recognize the role of self-awareness to create one’s leadership path by assessing one’s own strengths and weaknesses in leadership capacities including listening and cultural proficiency.
- Explain their leadership principles, values, and ethical boundaries, and how they will respond under pressure when challenged
- Develop and apply listening to support more effective teamwork and leadership
- Articulate leadership paths that will enable them to leverage their motivational capabilities
- Develop and apply leadership techniques that optimize their leadership effectiveness and empower others in creating organizational change strategies
- Articulate a Personal Leadership Development Plan that seeks to strengthen leadership skills

This course is evaluated as follows:
- 35% Leadership interview and Voice Thread
- 20% Self-assessments
- 15% Participation
- 30% Personal Leadership Development Plan

This course will be offered remotely in an asynchronous format. Students will be able to complete course requirements and watch recorded lectures at their own pace during the June 15-26 time period.
