Description
Offer an enhanced understanding of population structure and population dynamics underlying any public health issues; Hone sophisticated and unique analytical skills: decomposition, capture-recapture, calculating mortality from scratch!; Broaden students’ horizons by providing both domestic and international applications; Serve as a gateway to advanced demographic studies and research
Covers six areas regarding population studies including: population composition, fertility, migration, population projections, an introduction to stable populations, and measures of population health. Draws examples from data from both developed and developing countries.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Decompose changes in rates into composition and rate effects
  2. Calculate and discuss basic measures of mortality and fertility from vital registration or birth history data
  3. Calculate and discuss measures of migration and residential segregation
  4. Calculate and discuss the correct uses of various measures in population health and health disparities
  5. Project a national or sub-national population
