Description
Covers the basics about financing health care in low and middle-income countries, built around four themes of financing health systems: revenue sources, pooling, purchasing and provision of healthcare. Uses this framework to evaluate country health financing systems and the complex, political nature of health financing policy. Provides a good foundation of health financing for a career in global health by the end of the course.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Differentiate key health financing functions: financing, pooling, purchasing and provision mechanisms
  2. Explain socio-political forces that shape financing policy in health systems
  3. Critically assess financing arrangements in low- and middle-income countries
