Are you curious about adolescents and how they develop? Do you want to know more about what helps adolescents thrive, and what challenges to healthy development adolescents face?
If you answered yes, then the Adolescent Health and Development course is for you!
This course explores the exciting developmental period of adolescence and addresses public health challenges and opportunities for healthy adolescent development.
Consists of online recorded lectures and panel discussions, readings, LiveTalks, and two written assignments focused on an adolescent public health issue of your choosing. Lectures, readings, and discussion explore a variety of aspects of adolescence health and development. Paper assignments enhance knowledge of public health issues affecting adolescents, as well as evidence-based solutions and interventions.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
- Understand the biological and psychological developmental processes that occur during adolescence and puberty.
- Explore key topical areas, including adolescent mental health, substance use and abuse, juvenile justice, and racism, to identify their impact on adolescent health and development.
- Explore a public health issue affecting adolescents, including consideration of risks and protective factors at different levels of the social ecology.
- Identify an evidence-based or promising intervention for a public health issue affecting adolescents and critically analyze the research support for its efficacy.
- Demonstrate critical and analytical thinking through the two written assignments.
