Description
Behavior is central to many health issues. Understanding how to design interventions to improve health behaviors is relevant to all public health professionals. If you want to impact health behavior on the wing of your hospital, or at the community/state level - the content of this is relevant. You'll never look at a behavior change message the same!
Introduces students to different health behavior change theories addressing several levels of the Ecological Model. Reviews and practices using program planning frameworks and needs assessments for designing effective interventions. Chooses a public health problem of their choice and design a behavior change intervention to address that problem. Guides the process of creating the intervention by a needs assessment and is theoretically informed.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Explain the importance of health behavior as a contributor to current public health problems
  2. Describe the elements of at least two behavior change theories and their applicability to developing health education/health promotion programs
  3. Describe at least three intervention methods and their applicability to successful health education/health promotion programs
  4. Demonstrate skills in planning a health behavior change program by successfully completing a written needs assessment
