LGBTQ individuals “face several unique health challenges.” (Kaiser Family Foundation Issue Brief, May 2018. http://files.kff.org/attachment/Issue-Brief-Health-and-Access-to-Care-and-Coverage-for-LGBT-Individuals-in-the-US). How have some policies harmed the physical and mental health of LGBTQ individuals? How have some policies improved the physical and mental health of LGBTQ individuals? What are the barriers to adopting evidence-based policies that address the health needs of LGBTQ communities? What strategies can be mobilized to overcome these barriers? These questions will inform our discussion and analysis.
Examines the impact and importance of health policy on the health, well-being, and lives of LGBTQ people. Explores how particular health policies, both historically and currently, have contributed to and/or reduced health disparities within LGBTQ communities.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
- Explain the role of evidence-based health policy in reducing health disparities among LGBTQ individuals
- Recognize the role of specific health policies in contributing to or exacerbating health disparities among LGBTQ individuals
- Analyze the impact of specific policies, both historical and current, on the health of LGBTQ individuals
- Identify the scientific, cultural, sociopolitical, attitudinal and other factors that have impeded the adoption of policies that are responsive to the health needs of LGBTQ communities
