Overview
My work focuses on conducting theory-informed needs assessment research, building interventions based on those findings, and conducting both intervention trials and translational research to disseminate interventions. I have extensive knowledge of child injury prevention issues, having worked in this field as a practitioner and a researcher for more than three decades. I have led multiple federally-funded intervention trials in clinical and community settings, focused on preventing unintentional injuries to children, particularly among families living in low income, urban environments. This body of work incorporates the use of innovative communication technologies and behavior change theories to increase parents’ child safety behaviors, including child passenger safety, poisoning prevention, fire safety, pedestrian safety, among others.

From 2006-2020, I directed the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy and now as Professor Emerita, I continue active engagement with the Center as a senior advisor. I continue to consult on an NIH-funded study (McDonald and Solomon, Co-PIs) that will integrate safe sleep counseling into the electronic medical record and facilitate pediatric advice to new parents. In addition, I am continuing to work on manuscripts with colleagues, advise doctoral students on injury related and other public health research, and provide guest lectures on behavioral science and injury topics.
