Overview
I have focused my research on two areas: The first is the epidemiology and management of sexually transmitted infections, with a focus on the management of adult syphilis. I have studied the implications of concomitant HIV infection on the serological responses and central nervous system complications of syphilis. The second, and more recent area of focus has been on the impact of sex hormones on the composition and stability of the vaginal microbiome and susceptibility to sexually transmitted infections. My general clinical focus has been on infectious diseases with a particular focus on sexually transmitted infections. While faculty at Johns Hopkins, between 2010-2013, I was named Director of STD, HIV, and TB Clinical Services at the Baltimore City Health Department where I oversaw the integration of the TB Program with the HIV and STD clinics, the introduction of Express STD Testing, and the introduction of routine Hepatitis C testing and management within the STD Clinics. I am also the STD Consultant for the Maryland Department of Health’s Center for Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevention (CSTIP). I have also focused on both undergraduate and graduate medical education. I am director of the Microbiology/Infectious Diseases course for the first year medical students. I oversaw its transition to the Genes to Society curriculum. I was Associate Program Director for the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Training Program. In 2013, I became Deputy Director of Education for the Department of Medicine at Bayview where I oversee the Bayview Internal Medicine Residency Program and I am Director of the Scholarship Pathways. Finally, I am the PI on a CDC grant to train healthcare professionals in 7 states on principles of HIV and STD prevention.
