Hosted by the Institute for Global Tobacco Control (IGTC), the monthly Innovations in Tobacco Control lecture series welcomes key researchers and experts to share ideas, present their work, and spark discussion.

Presented via Zoom webinar, this virtual event welcomes Janet Hoek, PhD, for a lecture entitled, “Imagining Things Otherwise: Aotearoa New Zealand’s Tobacco Endgame.”

The lecture will be followed by a brief moderated Q&A and a recording of the event will subsequently be posted to IGTC’s YouTube channel.

Janet Hoek

Janet Hoek, PhD

Janet Hoek is a Professor of Public Health at the University of Otago, Wellington. She co-directs ASPIRE2025, one of the University of Otago's research centers. Dr. Hoek’s initial degrees were in English Literature, where she specialized in early medieval literature. She subsequently completed a PhD in survey research. She has received several awards for her teaching and research. Dr. Hoek co-directs two large research programs that support New Zealand’s tobacco endgame strategy: the HRC-funded Whakahā o te Pā Harakeke research program, and Te Rōpū Rangahau ō Te Kāhui Matepukupuku—a program funded by the NZ Cancer Society. She is also a CI on a new Australian Synergy grant that will examine tobacco endgames. Her earlier work has examined plain packaging, tobacco retailing, smoking and vaping uptake among young people, and transitions from smoking to vaping. Dr. Hoek is an elected Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand Marketing Academy and the Society for Research into Nicotine and Tobacco, and she also serves on several advisory groups and editorial boards.
