In 2017, the Baltimore City Health Department recorded 761 drug and alcohol related intoxication deaths, with 692 of those deaths related to opioids. In 2020 the number of confirmed unintentional alcohol and drug deaths increased to 1,028. Of the number of deaths associated with unintentional drug use, an overwhelming number were caused by fentanyl. Fentanyl is a highly potent synthetic opioid that often appears in heroin, cocaine, and other substances, often unknown to the user, making consumption of these drugs even more dangerous. Join Sarah Pollock, MHS '22, as she interviews Karin Tobin, Associate Professor in the Department of Health, Behavior, and Society, and Bakari Atiba of Charm City Care Connection for a panel discussion on how Baltimore City can reduce the upward trends of accidental opioid related deaths through peer-to-peer education and behavioral and social network interventions.
