About this Event
Join the Lerner Center for Public Health Advocacy and the Institute for Global Tobacco Control for a panel discussion on the FDA's proposed rule to ban menthol cigarettes and flavored cigar products and how the public can engage in the public comment period to build support.
Carol McGruder is a seasoned veteran of California’s tobacco control experience, and a founding member and Co-Chairperson of the African American Tobacco Control Leadership Council (AATCLC). Created to inform the direction of tobacco control policy, practices, and priorities, the AATCLC works at the intersection of public health policy and social injustice. They have fought resolutely against the decades of racialized and predatory tobacco industry targeting of the Black community and the resulting 45,000 Black lives lost each year from tobacco-induced diseases.
Matthew Wellington
Wellington spearheads PIRG’s public health campaigns, which include COVID-19 response efforts as well as campaigns to keep children from getting hooked on tobacco and to end the overuse of antibiotics in our food system. In his eight years with PIRG he's helped pass policies and win corporate commitments to protect public health across several issues. Wellington is also a regular contributor to major news outlets and has been featured in NBC Nightly News, the Wall St. Journal, CNN and more.
