Introduces students to experts across a variety of industries including government, clinical care, research, and private and non-profit organizations who utilize information technology and informatics concepts in the real world. Covers topics: how information technology is utilized in a variety of settings including clinical, public health, and research; what ethical considerations must be considered as an informatics specialist; what are the challenges experienced in implementing and utilizing health information technology that informatics experts have faced.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
- Explain how informatics is implemented and utilized in research, industry, and healthcare.
- Identify challenges and facilitators implementing informatics concepts in healthcare, public health agencies, and in research.
- Discuss ethical concerns in utilizing information technology and its impact on users such as clinicians, patients, and researchers.
Methods of Assessment
This course is evaluated as follows:
- 20% Participation
- 30% Discussion Board
- 50% Assignments
This course will be offered over several days during the HPM Summer Institute. Students will receive course materials prior to the start of the course. Assignments will be due no later than August 1, 2025, on a date identified by the instructor.
