Resources
Identifies public health problems, assesses evidence, and proposes policy strategies. Addresses how the policy process plays out in actuality in state legislatures across the country. Provides students with an inside look at the Virginia legislative session. Traces the trajectory of selected public health legislation from the prior Virginia legislative session through all steps of the legislative process and gains insights from those directly engaged on the key factors that shaped the Virginia legislative policy debates and outcomes.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
- Cite and explain key factors that shape the debate on state legislative policy issues
- Analyze opportunities for action and potential objections to change
- Examine the Virginia state legislative landscape to learn legislative strategies to create meaningful opportunities for change
Methods of Assessment
This course is evaluated as follows:
- 30% Participation
- 30% Discussion
- 40% Final Paper
This course will be offered in the Summer Institute over two days. Readings will be provided before the start of class. Assignments will be due on a date identified by the instructor, no assignment will be accepted after August 1, 2025
