Description
What constitutes an effective job search or an ineffective one? Job searching is commonly perceived as a passive activity that involves only searching for postings and applying online. This course challenges this misperception using a values framework to offers tools and strategies to contribute toward an effective public health job search centered on students’ career goals and objectives
Introduces personal and professional values concepts and emphasizes the importance of using a values-based framework to ground the job search process. Presents ways to identify and define work values for translation into CV/resumes, interviewing, networking, and branding for an authentic personal and effective job search strategy. Prepares masters students to engage in an active, self-reflective, relational job search process in alignment with their values and career goals. Includes drafting job application materials, interviewing, networking and presentation practice.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Identify and articulate their core professional values
  2. Evaluate job opportunities through the lens of their core professional values
  3. Design career goals grounded in their professional values
  4. Communicate their skills and strengths effectively in networking situations and in interviews
  5. Create resumes/CVs and cover letters tailored to positions of interest
  6. Develop tools and self-care strategies to address common challenges associated with job searching
