Bachelor’s degree and preferably a higher degree in fields such as nursing, engineering, biological/social sciences are encouraged but not required, and applicants from any background are welcome to confirm their eligibility by contacting the course instructor.

Description
This institute course engages national and international experts focused on how existing global health and development interventions can end the tuberculosis (TB) pandemic. TB kills more people and impairs quality of life more than any other infection. Cases are increasing globally but socioeconomic and biomedical changes and interventions have made TB rare in some countries. This institute will assess the evidence for these interdisciplinary and transformative approaches.
Covers global health and development interventions and how they can be applied towards ending the global TB pandemic. Includes the history, clinical presentation, epidemiological factors, new diagnostic techniques, treatment, and control of TB in the context of important comorbidities including HIV/AIDS, poverty and undernutrition. Focuses on resource-constrained settings including developing countries, their populations, and resource utilization, and the scope of the course is global. Emphasizes integrating policies addressing TB, HIV/AIDS, other infections and poverty in resource-poor settings and how these interactions influence control strategies.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Describe and analyze the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of TB and associated comorbidities including poverty and undernutrition
  2. Assess global health and development interventions and how they are applied in diverse settings
  3. Evaluate how global health and development interventions can be integrated towards ending the TB pandemic

This is the onsite section of a course also held virtual/online. You are responsible for the modality in which you register. PRE-COURSE HOMEWORK: One month prior to the institute, or immediately upon registration, required pre-course reading will be provided. This will be one document for each of the 25 lectures that will be given during the institute. On average, we estimate that each document will require approximately 30 minutes to read and consider. This is intended to constitute pre-course homework and can be completed any time prior to each lecture. POST-COURSE HOMEWORK: A reflection and feedback assignment will on average require approximately 10 minutes per lecture. This is intended to constitute post-course homework and can be completed any time after each lecture. This must be completed within one week of completion of the institute and is required for the institute to be completed, contributing 25% of the institute credit/grade.
