Description
Covers strategies for constructing a compelling scientific grant application, common errors in grantsmanship and how to avoid them, grant application review criteria, ethics related to grant writing and reviewing, and identification of funding sources. Provides instruction and feedback on NIH-style proposal development and revision. Includes proposal topics selected by the student and developed with the instructor. Prepares critiques of classmates’ anonymous, instructor-edited proposals for discussion in class.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Identify essential components of hypothesis-driven research plans
  2. Construct a proposal intended to convince reviewers
  3. Gain grantsmanship skills by identifying the strengths and weaknesses of other proposals
  4. Experience the strengths and caveats of a peer-review system
  5. Prepares a short 6-page NIH-style proposal and a revision of this same proposal following review
  6. Prepares critiques of classmates' anonymous, instructor-edited proposals for discussion in class

This course is evaluated as follows:
  • 100% Student evaluation based on completion of a well-developed proposal,constructive critiques of other proposals and class participation
