Examines the role of the risk sciences in the public policy process. Presents a case study approach to the broad societal context of risk-based decision-making, including the scientific, social, economic, legal and political factors that drive the policy process. Provides an overview of risk management tools and the application of risk communication principles and strategies. Provides an understanding of how the risk sciences are applied in the formulation and implementation of public health risk policy in “the real world.”
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
- Prepare a health risk policy case study distinguishing among relevant policy options
- Select and present scientific data to inform the policy development and decision-making processes
- Practice good risk communication skills
- Evaluate the influence of economic, social, and political factors on health risk policy debates
