Familiarizes students with techniques used to detect and quantify the presence of clinical cardiovascular disease. Tours clinical facilities including diagnostic imaging laboratories. Observes radiographic (CT and MRI) imaging of atherosclerosis and review gross and histological specimens of atherosclerosis in the pathology laboratory. Observes various cardiac imaging techniques performed including 1) cardiac echocardiography 2) coronary angiography 3) coronary calcium evaluation and coronary CT angiography using multi-detector CT 4) cardiac MRI 5) DEXA and anthropometric measures of body composition 6) virtual observation of peripheral vascular imaging using ultrasound.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
- Identify the techniques used to detect and quantify the presence of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, including identification of atherosclerosis in vessels in cadavers and on pathology slides, and by radiographic techniques including coronary angiography, coronary CT scan, and stress testing
- Differentiate techniques for evaluation of different arrhythmias using EKG and Ziopatch, and Loop recorders
- Discuss techniques for evaluation of different cardiac pathologies including myocardial infarction, myocarditis, and infiltrative cardiomyopathies using different modalities such as echocardiography, MRI, and pathological specimens
- Discuss modalities for renal replacement and vascular access options
- Hypothesize clinical assessment of blood pressure and ankle/brachial index
