This course equips students with knowledge and skills that could be useful to understand communication-induced hazards, harms, and related challenges in health care.
Provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the communication pitfalls that can contribute to error and preventable harm in healthcare. Teaches ten misconceptions about communication that frequently cause interpersonal failures in communication, and how certain aspects of the healthcare setting facilitate their occurrence. Teaches specific interpersonal communication practices that are prone to failure, and how to replace them with five “safe communication” competencies that help them communicate more reliably and support safe, high-quality care.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Identify common communication pitfalls, and how they contribute to preventable safety events.
  2. Identify and correct frequent misconceptions about human communication that commonly lead to patient safety events.
  3. Replace these common communication weaknesses with five concrete “safe communication” practices to make the connections between us more resilient to interpersonal failures.

This course is evaluated as follows:
  • 10% Participation

  • 30% Group Presentation

This course will be offered in the HPM Summer Institute. Students will be assigned pre-course readings that must be completed prior to the start of class. No assignment will be accepted after August 4, 2023. This is an onsite section of a course also held online/virtually. You are responsible for the modality in which you register.
