International Health Faculty and Students Receive Global Health Day 2020 Awards

Each year, the Center for Global Health at Johns Hopkins University celebrates global health knowledge, expertise, and experience through its Global Health Day event. The day is an opportunity to honor faculty, staff, and students for their outstanding global health field experiences and mentorship. While the 2020 Global Health Day was held virtually, it still succeeded as an opportunity to acknowledge all the hard work that faculty, staff, and students put into the field of global health during the past year.

As part of the celebration, the Center announced global health awards for faculty advising, student field experience posters, and photography. Faculty and students in the Department of International Health received awards in all three categories.

Global Health Faculty Advising

The Center honors faculty who demonstrate outstanding mentorship during a global health learning experience through the Global Health Faculty Advising Award. Students are given the opportunity to nominate their faculty mentors for their support, guidance, and mentorship. The Department’s Shannon Doocy, PhD, and Alain Labrique, PhD, were recipients of this year’s award, along with Becky Lynn Genberg, PhD, in the Department of Epidemiology.

J.B. Grant Society Global Health Photography Competition
Global Health Day 2020 includes a global health photography competition every year. The competition is co-sponsored by the J.B. Grant Society and is open to all faculty, students, and staff at Johns Hopkins University. This year, Sudip Bhandari, a doctoral student in the Department’s Health Systems Program, received first place for his submission, “Inequality (India, 2019).” The photo was taken from a popular tourist spot in Mumbai, India. It overlooks a Dhobi Ghat (open laundromat) that is over 100 years old, with sprawling towers in the background. It was taken while Bhandari was working on the Uttar Pradesh Health Systems Strengthening Project.

Student Poster Competition

International Health students Kasey Kinzel, MSPH ’20 of the Health Systems Program, and Anika Jain, MSPH ’20 of the Social and Behavioral Interventions Program, received 2nd and 3rd place, respectively, in the Global Health Day poster competition. All student recipients of Center grants are eligible to submit posters highlighting their global health experiences.

Kinzel’s poster submission, "Estimating the Cost of Illness for Typhoid Fever in Nepal: A Sub-Study of the Typhoid Vaccine Acceleration Consortium (TyVAC)," summarizes her experience working on a study that aims to assess the direct and indirect costs of enteric fever in Kathmandu, Nepal. The poster includes project objectives and activities, public health impact, participant timeline, and Kinzel’s personal field experiences.

Anika Jain’s poster submission, "The Immunization Impact on Cognition Outcomes and School Monitoring Outcomes Study (I-COSMOS)," summarizes her experience developing and conducting a qualitative study to explore factors affecting community acceptance of immunizations in rural Haryana, India.
