We Are the Medicine
Christina Bethell discusses mindfulness in the context of public health during Dean’s Lecture.
On November 23, Christina Bethell, PhD, MBA, MPH, takes the podium in Sheldon Hall to present a provocative Dean’s Lecture that connects mindfulness and public health. This event is one of a series that celebrates the appointment or promotion of a faculty member to the level of professor during the previous academic year at the Bloomberg School.
In Bethell’s own words, her integrative research combines “knowledge about brain plasticity, epigenetics and social determinants of health to make relationships, self-awareness and mindfulness a matter of public health.” Mindfulness can allow people to make healthier decisions during stressful moments, when people may otherwise “irresistibly turn to food, alcohol or other behaviors that contribute to ill health.”
Bethell, who teaches in the Department of Population, Family and Reproductive Health, is a course facilitator for Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction.
The lecture series, which Dean Michael J. Klag, MD, MPH ’87, has been hosting for 10 years, is an opportunity for some of the Bloomberg School’s most engaging faculty to share innovative ideas and research with a broad audience. “Earning the rank of professor at the Bloomberg School represents an incredible achievement and confirms not only the respect and high regard of the School but also of colleagues across the nation and throughout the world,” Klag says.
