You've probably heard the horror stories of pregnant people's desperate attempts to induce their own abortions before abortion was legalized nationwide in 1973. For many, the tragic coat hanger imagery of the era is the first thing that comes to mind when they think of illegal abortion. And now that Mississippi has formally asked the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade next summer, and  Texas has just become the first state to successfully ban early abortion since the landmark case was decided—with nearly half the states in the country poised to follow—the fear of skyrocketing rates of unsafe abortion in the U.S. has reignited.

But what does self-managed abortion actually look like in the 21st century? Is it safe? It is effective? Is it legal? And where does public health fit into all of this?
