These resources from the Global Task Force on Cholera Control (GTFCC) provide guides for treating patients with cholera in health facilities and also provide a framework for establishing effective prevention practices at both community and national levels.

The Technical Note on Water, Sanitation, Hygiene, and Infection Prevention and Control in Cholera Treatment Structures offers practical guidelines for setting up and operating cholera treatment facilities, with a focus on maintaining WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) and IPC (Infection Prevention and Control) standards to reduce disease transmission within healthcare environments.

Complementing this, the Guidance for Integrating Community Engagement into National Cholera Plans outlines methods for embedding community-driven strategies into national cholera plans, ensuring local involvement and cultural sensitivity in prevention and control efforts. Together, these documents support comprehensive cholera response strategies, from clinical care to community engagement, facilitating holistic, multi-level approaches to cholera management and elimination.

  1. GTFCC Technical Note on Water Sanitation and Hygiene and Infection Prevention and Control In Cholera Treatment Structures: This technical note by the GTFCC describes WASH and IPC practices for effective cholera management and outbreak prevention in cholera treatment centers. This document provides protocols for setting up and organizing facilities, water quality and hygiene requirements, and waste management, ensuring safe and dignified care for patients and communities.
  2. Clinical Job Aids: To aid healthcare teams in cholera treatment centers, the GTFCC Case Management Working Group developed a set of 10 informative posters. These provide guidance on patient assessment, a treatment algorithm, and specific treatment plans tailored to dehydration severity. They also address the management of complications such as hypoglycemia and outline discharge criteria.
  3. GTFCC Guidance on Integrating Community Engagement in National Cholera Plans: This document provides an approach for countries to incorporate community engagement in cholera control strategies. This document outlines community-centered activities across four phases Inception, Development, Implementation, and Monitoring emphasizing collaboration with local groups to foster trust, increase participation, and ensure effective, tailored cholera prevention. Key elements include a planning template, guidance on multi-sectoral collaboration, and practical tools for monitoring community feedback and response efficacy, ultimately supporting each pillar of cholera control.
  4. Interim Technical Note Treatment of Cholera in Pregnant Women: This document provides guidance for managing cholera in pregnant women, who face specific risks such as spontaneous abortion, pre-term labor, and intra-uterine fetal death. It outlines clinical evaluation and treatment protocols, including rehydration methods and antibiotic options, tailored to each stage of pregnancy. The document also offers guidance for newborn care in cholera treatment centers and referral procedures for both mother and child upon discharge.
  5. Treatment of Children with Cholera and Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM): This resource provides a step-by-step protocol for healthcare workers managing cholera in children with SAM, addressing the unique risks and treatment needs of these vulnerable patients. The job aid outlines specific rehydration protocols for different dehydration levels, recommended antibiotics, monitoring for overhydration, and reassessment of nutritional status following rehydration.
