Evidence to Action: Igniting Change to End Gender-Based Violence

The Johns Hopkins Center for Global Women’s Health and Gender Equity will host Evidence to Policy Action: Igniting Change to End Gender-Based Violence on Monday, May 6th from 1pm-7pm at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg Center at 555 Pennsylvania Ave in Washington, DC.

International Women's Day 2024 Event

JHU students, faculty, and alums came together for an International Women's Day celebration event with inspiring keynote speakers Drs. Fatoumata Adelle Barry, MD, MPH, Anaise Williams, PhD, MPH, Anita Vernekar Shnkar, PhD and Mauli Mehta.

To discuss the emergent women’s health and leadership issues globally, the value and application of key metrics and indices to track progress, the many achievements since the influential 1995 Beijing Platform for Action, the road ahead, and the value of evidence- informed policy and practice.

 

Public Health on Call Podcast Feature

February 6th marked the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting, which raises awareness to challenge long-standing cultural norms and galvanize collective actions to end the practice. New Intersectionality Course!

Led by Affiliated Faculty Dr. Tiara Willie, the new Intersectionality in Public Mental Health course explores how racism, sexism, classism, and more intersect to shape experiences of violence and mental health symptoms.  Offered in the 3rd term.

Why Nairobi GBV survivors don’t seek help: New data from Agile 2.0 profiled in The Star

Data from Center-led projects in Nairobi Kenya, in collaboration with Kenyatta University Women’s Economic Empowerment Hub (KU WEE Hub), and ICRH Kenya, demonstrate that survivors of intimate partner violence and non-partner sexual violence are not seeking help for their experiences, owing to fear, stigma, and shame. As reported by The Star, Nairobi, the data revealed approximately one in three GBV survivors seek help and one in two speak to someone about their experience.

Report on gender based violence released in Nairobi, Kenya with national media coverage

Released in October 2023, our gender equity/GBV research with youth in Nairobi, Kenya garnered national media attention.  This collaborative action research project, with Kenyatta University Women’s Economic Empowerment Hub (KU WEE Hub) and ICRH Kenya,  blends cutting-edge measurement and innovation, strategic knowledge sharing to diverse audiences, and mentored training.  Check out Center Director Dr. Michele Decker, sharing results on KTN News.

New funding to build the evidence based on sexual violence prevention on college campuses

Researchers at the Center for Global Women’s Health and Gender Equity have been awarded a Phase 2 Cooperative Agreement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for their work in environmental and situation prevention of sexual violence, in collaboration with policy and practitioner partners at Maryland Department of HealthMaryland Coalition Against Sexual AssaultBowie State University, and St. Mary's College of Maryland.

The Center for Global Women’s Health and Gender Equity (GWHGE) launched October 18th, 2023 at Johns Hopkins University (JHU). Faculty, students, staff and partners from across the University came together to celebrate this joyous occasion.
