Cancer

In the U.S., more than one million people are diagnosed with new cancer each year, and an estimated 14 million people are living with cancer of any site.

The common cancers in the U.S. are cancers of breast, prostate, lung, colorectal, and uterus. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) also concluded obesity is a cause of certain cancers.

Welch Center faculty conduct studies that focus on cancer prevention and control, including clinical trials of lifestyle interventions (e.g. diet, physical activity, weight loss) to improve cancer survival and cohort studies of novel biomarkers. Our faculty have the expertise on design and conduct of community-based studies that engage underrepresented minorities.

We are committed to training future leaders in population-based and community-based studies of cancer. The major population-based cohorts, randomized clinical trials, and data from health care systems provide ample opportunities for original research as well as secondary data analysis.

Welch Center Faculty with research interests in cancer are: Lawrence AppelNisa MaruthurElizabeth Selvin, and Jessica Yeh.
