Leadership and Board

Jane M. Carlton, PhD

Director, Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute

Jane Carlton, PhD, a biologist and leader in the field of comparative genomics, joined the Bloomberg School of Public Health as director of the JHMRI on August 1. Carlton’s research is focused on using genomics—the interdisciplinary study of an organism’s complete set of genes and DNA, or genome—to further understand the biology and evolution of malaria parasites and their mosquito vectors. Carlton comes from New York University, where she was the Julius Silver, Roslyn S. Silver, and Enid Silver Winslow Professor in the Department of Biology and the School of Public Health; faculty director of Genomic Sequencing at the Center for Genomics & Systems Biology; and the program director of a National Institutes of Health-funded International Center of Excellence for Malaria Research based in India.

Research focus: several species of the Plasmodium parasite that cause malaria, including Plasmodium vivax

George Dimopoulos, PhD, MBA

Professor, Molecular Microbiology and Immunology
Deputy Director, Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute

Prior to joining the Institute, Dimopoulos was Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London (2001-03) and an Ellison Medical Foundation New Scholar (2004-07).

Research focus: mosquitoes that transmit human pathogens

William Moss, MD, MPH

Professor, Department of Epidemiology
Program Director of the Southern & Central Africa International Center of Excellence for Malaria Research
Deputy Director, Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute

Moss led the International Center of Excellence for Malaria Research (ICEMR) of Southern Africa from 2010 - 2017 and has led the ICEMR of Southern and Central Africa since 2017. He oversees the field work at Macha Research Trust in Zambia.

Research focus: malaria transmission in the field

Sean Prigge, PhD

Professor, Molecular Microbiology and Immunology
Deputy Director, Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute
Director of Biophysics Core Facility

Research focus: biophysical studies of malaria apicoplast and mitochondrial proteins

Photini Sinnis, MD

Professor of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology
Deputy Director, Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute

Before joining the Institute, Sinnis was an Associate Professor at New York University School of Medicine in the Department of Medical Parasitology and Department of Medicine.

Research focus: sporozoites, the infective stage of the malaria parasite
