IAA Work Environments for Healthcare Personnel: Inclusive, accessible, and adapted

Currently, we are witnessing continuous changes in trends and forms of employment. Additionally, there is a transition towards new social models that impact on the work environment. In this transition, what happens to disabled workers in healthcare environments? Are these environments suitable for this group? An inclusive, accessible and adapted healthcare environment is necessary to meet their needs, with technical supports to create a safe environment on equal terms, where the disability should not define the person or been seen as a limitation, but rather as way to enhance the value of the work environment valor, eliminating prejudices and any social and corporate barriers, taking into account only the talent, competencies and values of the person, and not the external, physical, superficial characteristics, situations or difficulties of the person.

Several studies highlight the benefits of inclusive workplaces. On a professional level, it increases team commitment, creative and new perspectives, making work environments, including sanitary, more enriching and increasing their productivity in all areas. On a social level, work contributes to the development of self-esteem, mental health, and well-being, improving their social and emotional well-being and life quality.

The aim isn’t just to increase the participation of people with disabilities in the healthcare environment, but also to ensure that this participation takes place on an equal level with their counterparts. Given these changes and employment trends, it’s necessary to promote an inclusive transformation in all healthcare environments, ensuring the principles of equal opportunities, non-discrimination and accessibility to the entire working population, including those people with disabilities, while also ensuring their physical, mental and social health.
