Michelle Ogunwole, MD, PhD recently received a DiabDocs National K12 Physician Scientist Career Development Award from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases for a postpartum meal delivery intervention for Black mothers with Gestational Diabetes.

Ogunwole’s research aims to support healthy lifestyles for Black women who have experienced metabolically complicated pregnancies. Her newly funded research will investigate the impact of structural racism on the food environment for Black postpartum women with the goal of creating and evaluating postpartum interventions that facilitate systemic changes.

Collaborating closely with Black mothers, Ogunwole and her team aim to enhance healthy eating habits during the postpartum period. Using geospatial analysis, the study will examine how food systems contribute to and perpetuate inequities. Ogunwole and her team will also be examining the role of food inequities on complications related to pregnancy, such as gestational diabetes.
