Team Members & Network

The R3ISE team strives to educate broadly interested scientists to become not only technically proficient but also open-minded, reflective, creative, and skilled in scientific reasoning, problem-solving, and innovative research design.

R3ISE Full-Time Faculty

Gundula Bosch, PhD, MS, MEd

Director & Founder,
Research Professor

In her function as the Director of the R³ Center for Innovation in Science Education (R³ISE) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Dr. Bosch developed and leads the R³ Graduate Science Programs that stand for “the three R’s” of good scientific practice: Rigor in research conduct, Reproducibility of results, and Responsibility of scientists to society.

Originally from Munich, Germany, she holds a PhD in Biology from the Max-Planck-Institute of Biochemistry and a master’s degree in Education from Johns Hopkins University.

Under Dr. Bosch’s leadership, the R³ISE team offers graduate-level programs that bring formal training in critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, sound research methodology, interdisciplinary collaboration, ethical decision-making, effective communication, and social justice into graduate student training in biomedicine, public health, engineering, and technology.

Ilinca Ciubotariu, PhD, MHS

Assistant Director,
Assistant Scientist

Originally from Bucharest, Romania, and raised in NYC, she holds a PhD in Biology from Purdue University in Biological Sciences and a master’s degree from the Molecular Microbiology & Immunology Department from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She completed her undergraduate studies in biological sciences at Columbia University.

Dr. Ciubotariu is an infectious disease scientist by training and brings great expertise in the topics of malaria and SARS-CoV-2. She is the recipient of numerous accolades for her research, and has published over 20 articles to date ranging from peer-reviewed research works, preprints, openly shared protocols, perspective pieces, and more. She is a strong proponent of the mission of R3 and a passionate educator, teaching multiple courses across the program.

Arturo Casadevall, PhD, MD

Founder,
Professor

Dr. Arturo Casadevall is the Chair of the W. Harry Feinstone Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology. As a microbiologist and immunologist, he is a globally known expert in humoral immunity, molecular biology, virulence and cryptococcosis.
Dr. Casadevall’s laboratory studies two fundamental questions: First, how do microbes cause disease? Second, how do hosts, such as humans, protect themselves against microbes? To address these large questions, the laboratory has a multidisciplinary research program spanning several areas of basic immunology and microbiology.

Tamaki Kobayashi, PhD, MPH, MSc

R3ISE Contributors & Collaborators

Assistant Research Professor
Molecular Microbiology and Immunology

Emma Camacho, PhD, explores strategies to modify melanin production in organisms that may pose a threat to human health.
