Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit Present, Lead Virtual Sessions in 2021 SAVIR Conference

Faculty and staff from the Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit presented at and led sessions in the 2021 Society for Advancement of Violence and Injury Research (SAVIR) April 5-9, 2021.

Adapted into a virtual conference due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 virtual conference featured compelling keynote speakers, insightful networking roundtable sessions, and hometown Baltimore flair despite being an exclusively online event.

Leadership from JH-IIRU and the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy—the two co-hosting organizations—welcomed participants. JH-IIRU Director Dr. Abdul Bachani and JH-CIRP’s Dr. Shannon Frattaroli spoke after welcomes from SAVIR President Dr. Theresa Cruz and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Dean Dr. Ellen MacKenzie. The Morgan State University choir performed a special musical number followed by plenary presentations by the University of Auckland’s Dr. Shanthi Ameratunga and University of California, Los Angeles’ Dr. Chandra Ford.

Team leadership, including Drs. Shivam Gupta, Qingfeng Li, Jessica Ott, and Nukhba Zia led networking and Learning Lab roundtable sessions on multidisciplinary injury prevention topics throughout the week.

For the event’s social event, Baltimore’s Chef John Shields led a special demonstration on how to prepare Maryland crab cakes and then JH-IIRU’s Eric Schulman hosted a game night, complete with trivia, fun, and special prizes.
