JH-IIRU Sponsors EMS Training Festival in Kenya

On June 12-13, 2015, The Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit (JH-IIRU) sponsored the annual two-day Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Competition and Training Festival in Nairobi, Kenya.

The festival, now in its third year, is an opportunity for emergency medical technicians (EMTs) to develop and demonstrate knowledge and skills in emergency medical care.

The event was held at the Kenya Institute for Curriculum Development, Nairobi and had 250 EMTs from Kenya Red Cross, Thika ICT Fire and Rescue, Avenue Emergency Serives, AAR Healthcare, St. Johns Ambulance and the National Disaster Management Unit participated.

Day one included a plenary session on trauma updates and four skill stations that covered basic and advanced airway management, trauma management, IV therapy and extraction methods. A simulation exercise providers was held on day to as a way for EMS service providers to assess practical skills.
