Executive Director of Centre for Injury Prevention and Research, Bangladesh Visits JH-IIRU

On September 3, Dr. AKM Fazlur Rahman, Executive Director of the Centre for Injury Prevention and Research, Bangladesh (CIPRB) visited JH-IIRU.  Dr. Rahman is currently working with JH-IIRU faculty member, assistant scientist, Dr. Kunle Alonge, on the Saving of Lives from Drowning, Bangladesh, (SoLid), a project that aims to reduce the shocking number of childhood deaths from drowning in the country. Other JH-IIRU team members on the project include director, Dr. Adnan Hyder, project coordinator, Shirin Wadhwaniya, and research program coordinator Priyanka Agrawal.

As part of the visit, Dr. Rahman presented “From Injury Epidemiology to Injury Prevention: The Bangladesh Experience,” in which he discussed the magnitude of the injury problem in the country and outlined prevention efforts. For example, child injury is a significant problem in Bangladesh with approximately 75,000 children under the age of 18 dying annually, half of which are caused by drowning. However, organizations like CIPRB are developing and participating in intervention projects like SoLiD, to help reduce the rates of death due to unintentional injury. 

The CIPRB was established in 2005 to address this neglected public health issue in Bangladesh and has become one of the world’s leading non-profit research organizations working to prevent injuries in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
