The sixteen posters and one oral presentation covered domestic and international work on topics such as health warning label compliance, tobacco packaging regulations and the marketing of tobacco products. Eight staff members and one student presented work at the meeting.
Additionally, IGTC Director Joanna Cohen provided the policy/public health theme plenary with a presentation on "Packaged to Persuade: Building the Scientific Case for Plain and Standardized Packaging for All Tobacco Products." The presentation emphasized the need for plain and standardized packaging by demonstrating the broad array of design features and marketing appeals used in tobacco product packaging, the many different sizes and shapes for packaging across the world, and how tobacco companies manipulate graphic health warning labels.
The presentation highlighted the work of IGTC, particularly the Institute’s work on the Tobacco Pack Surveillance System study and outlined how low- and middle-income countries have led the way in tobacco control policies, including with large picture health warnings. At least 19 countries have implemented plain and standardized packaging to combat the enticing packages created by the tobacco industry. Associate professor Ryan David Kennedy introduced Cohen at the plenary session.
