R³ISE Diversity, Inclusion, Community Engagement and Outreach

Who (Else) Should be on Stamps? 

The impact of historic role models in learning materials used in graduate science education is understudied. Our collaborative project “Who (else) should be on stamps?” assesses the educational impact of learning elements that feature and evaluate the contributions of historic role models in science by means of critical storytelling. 

In collaboration with JHU SOURCE, librarians, and historians from the Bloomberg School and the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, the R³ISE team invites interested volunteers to help compose a collection of facts and stories about the contributions of underrepresented groups to science.  

Community Engagement and Outreach 

Through innovative teaching, we are integrating values of inclusion, diversity, equity, and anti-racism into our graduate education programs and beyond.  

Among our community engagement efforts are student- and faculty-led initiatives to support local high schools such as the Commodore John Rogers School and Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in their assessment efforts. With support from JHU SOURCE, we partner with local community organizations to develop and teach novel service-learning formats that allow our students to meaningfully contribute to the Baltimore community through civic engagement projects in an online environment.
