Funding begins: January 1 of the following year

Letter of Intent should be dated, addressed to the JHMRI Director and Deputy Directors and list the anticipated specific aims.  Letters and applications MUST come from the applicant with their mentor's approval.  Candidates are advised to discuss their eligibility prior to preparing an application with Genevieve Williams, Program Manager (Tel. 410-614-4883, email: genevieve.williams@jhu.edu)

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

  • The Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute (JHMRI) was established for the generation of basic knowledge on the malaria parasite, human host, mosquito vector and their interactions in order to provide the tools necessary for effective malaria treatment, prevention and control in the future.
  • The fellowship program was established to provide a maximum of two years fellowship and health insurance support for pre-doctoral and post-doctoral fellows interested in malaria research.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Pre-doctoral fellowships: Only pre-doctoral fellows currently in a JHMRI faculty member's laboratory or a faculty member's laboratory affiliated with JHMRI are eligible to apply. Fellows must have satisfied all the requirements of coursework, laboratory rotations and departmental/school qualifying examinations including oral exam. (PhD candidates only)
  • Post-doctoral fellowships: Current JHMRI personnel working in a JHMRI faculty member's laboratory or a faculty member's laboratory affiliated with JHMRI are eligible to apply. In order to apply, you must have a PhD.
  • *Please note: Only a single fellowship (pre-doctoral or post-doctoral) will be awarded to any given Principal Investigator in a calendar year.

Financial Support

Pre-doctoral and Post-doctoral fellows will receive the following support from JHMRI:

  • Stipend per NRSA guidelines for a maximum of two years, predetermined by existing policies
  • Health insurance for the awardee
  • Second year funding is strictly dependent upon performance and research achievements during first year funding. 

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Letters of Intent are expected by November 1. Invited applicants may be asked to present brief summaries of their proposed research.

Pre-doctoral applications must include:

  • 2 page description of proposed research plan (specific aims, long-term objectives, and brief background) including the candidate’s chosen thesis topic. Please note that candidate’s thesis topic will be the basis for financial consideration. It is strongly suggested that the candidate discuss this research with a faculty member prior to submission. Figures/Tables/References are included in page count.
  • Completed copy of the JHMRI Fellowship Information Sheet/Checklist
  • Unofficial copy of undergraduate transcripts from departmental file
  • Unofficial copy of current transcripts
  • Complete CV listing of all abstracts and publications/poster presentations
  • Brief description of prior research experience
  • Two letters of recommendation; one letter must be provided from the candidate’s current advisor - letters must be in a sealed envelope or private/confidential email to genevieve.williams@jhu.edu 
  • JHMRI faculty advisor statement of support form
  • Faculty advisor’s full NIH biosketch

Post-doctoral applications must include:

  • 2 page description of proposed research plan (specific aims, long-term objectives, and brief background). It is strongly suggested that the candidate discuss this research with a faculty member prior to submission. Figures/Tables/References are included in page count.
  • Completed copy of the JHMRI Fellowship Information Sheet/Checklist
  • Complete CV, listing all abstracts and publications/poster presentations
  • Brief description of prior research experience

REQUIREMENTS

All regular term pre-doctoral and post-doctoral fellows supported by the JHMRI funds are expected to present their research work (paper/poster) at a JHMRI or MMI event as well as give a Malaria Friday Seminar presentation and assist with other duties for Malaria Friday Seminars and JHMRI symposia. Fellows are expected to regularly attend Malaria Friday Seminars. Presentations and publications must acknowledge the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute and the Bloomberg Philanthropies. For progress reporting, please use the JHMRI Fellowship Progress Report Form and follow the NIH Form 398 guidelines. 

First Year Progress Report is due on 1 month prior to completion of the 1st year and should include:

  • Progress based on the research plan outlined in the initial application
  • Copy of abstracts presented at any meetings during first year funding period
  • Copies of all published, accepted, or submitted papers produced during 1st year fellowship                                                 

Final Progress Report is due at the end of the second year and should include:

  • Description of progress for the entire two-year fellowship period
  • Copies of abstract of presented at any meeting during fellowship period
  • Copies of all published, accepted, or submitted papers produced during fellowship

PUBLICATION ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Publications and presentations must acknowledge the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute and the Bloomberg Philanthropies.
