Center Students Team Up to Design Away Injury

Students from Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH) and The Cornell College of Human Ecology, Department of Human Centered Design teamed up to participate in the Safety by Design Charette held May 3-4 at the BSPH. The goal of the design challenge was to redesign the 9th floor terrace located in the 615 N. Wolfe Street building to be safe and supportive for older adults by eliminating injury risks through thoughtful programing and design thinking.

The fifteen participating students were divided into three- or four-person teams consisting of both BSPH and Cornell Human Centered Design (CHCD) students. During the two-day Charette, they interacted with leaders in the field of injury prevention and engaged in experiential activities focused on the five stages of design thinking.

Professor Emeritus and founding Johns Hopkins Injury Center Director (1987), Sue Baker made an appearance on the second day to participate in the presentation and feedback phase of the competition. 

First place, with a total prize of $1,500, was awarded to Ivy Cao (CHCD)Sharmini Rathakrishnan (BSPH), and Yvonne Allard (BSPH).

Second place, with a total prize of $1,000, was awarded to Karen Joyce (CHCD) and Justus Alfaro (BSPH).

The following teams were awarded honorary mention and a total prize of $600 per team:
